Carolina Cares is a direct-aid program of The Poston Foundation that combines practical Essentials Kits with proactive community outreach for individuals and families facing hardship, instability, homelessness, displacement, or other immediate resource gaps across South Carolina.

Why It Matters
Hardship does not begin at the poverty line.
People can be working, housed, and still reach a point where everyday necessities compete with rent, transportation, child care, food, health costs, or an unexpected disruption. Carolina Cares is designed for that immediate layer of need: practical items that can make the next day, appointment, work shift, school day, or transition more manageable.

Carolina Cares does not claim to solve poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, or other structural problems. It responds to immediate practical gaps with useful essentials, delivered respectfully.
The Essentials Kit
Every item should serve a purpose.
Kit contents vary with season, availability, donated supplies, distribution setting, and community need. The objective is not to create an elaborate package. It is to create a practical one.
Hygiene & Personal Care
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, wipes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, and other appropriate personal-care items.
Clothing & Comfort
Clean socks and other practical basics selected for the season and distribution context.
Food, Water & Safety
Shelf-stable snacks, bottled water, basic first-aid items, seasonal necessities, and practical resource information.
Direct Outreach Model
The kit is the tool. Reaching unmet need is the method.
Carolina Cares grew from a simple field lesson documented in 2020: the people facing the greatest vulnerability may also be the least able to find, reach, navigate, or safely retain conventional assistance. The program therefore supplements centralized distribution with direct outreach when appropriate and operationally feasible.
Do not measure success only by how many items leave the table. Ask whether practical assistance reached people facing real, immediate need.
Identify
Recognize immediate practical barriers and distribution gaps through appropriate observation, referrals, community relationships, and partner information.
Reach
Bring assistance closer to where people are when circumstances, safety, resources, and program scope allow.
Assist
Provide an Essentials Kit or other approved practical support appropriate to the immediate barrier.
Connect
Offer useful resource information or community connections when appropriate while protecting dignity and privacy.

Why We Are Fundraising Now

A reliable supply fund allows The Poston Foundation to purchase products when prices are favorable, take advantage of bulk purchasing opportunities, replenish inventory, coordinate packing activities, and prepare for distributions without beginning from zero every time an opportunity to help emerges.
The objective is not one successful fundraiser. It is a credible, repeatable community-support program capable of serving South Carolinians year after year.
