Carolina Cares is The Poston Foundation’s direct-aid initiative for people facing hardship, instability, homelessness, displacement, or another moment when basic necessities are suddenly out of reach. We assemble and distribute practical Essentials Kits across South Carolina as funding and capacity allow.

Why It Matters
Hardship does not begin at the poverty line.
People can be working, housed, and still reach a point where everyday necessities compete with rent, transportation, child care, food, health costs, or an unexpected disruption. Carolina Cares is designed for that immediate layer of need: practical items that can make the next day, appointment, work shift, school day, or transition more manageable.

Carolina Cares does not claim to solve poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, or other structural problems. It responds to immediate practical gaps with useful essentials, delivered respectfully.
The Essentials Kit
Every item should serve a purpose.
Kit contents vary with season, availability, donated supplies, distribution setting, and community need. The objective is not to create an elaborate package. It is to create a practical one.
Hygiene & Personal Care
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, wipes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, and other appropriate personal-care items.
Clothing & Comfort
Clean socks and other practical basics selected for the season and distribution context.

Shelf-stable snacks, bottled water, basic first-aid items, seasonal necessities, and practical resource information.

Why We Are Fundraising Now
The next distribution starts before the day we hand out a single kit.
A reliable supply fund allows The Poston Foundation to purchase products when prices are favorable, take advantage of bulk purchasing opportunities, replenish inventory, coordinate packing activities, and prepare for distributions without beginning from zero every time an opportunity to help emerges.
The objective is not one successful fundraiser. It is a credible, repeatable community-support program capable of serving South Carolinians year after year.

Building on the Original Effort
Carolina Cares began with people going into the community and helping.
The renewed initiative is strengthening fundraising systems, sponsorship opportunities, internal controls, volunteer coordination, digital infrastructure, grant readiness, community partnerships, and repeatable procedures for assembling and distributing Essentials Kits.
The Poston Foundation is a small nonprofit. That is precisely why the program is being built carefully: with conservative public claims, documented spending, clear use of funds, and realistic measures of growth.
Carolina Cares: 2020 → Today
The work came first. The structure followed.
Carolina Cares began during the first months of COVID-19 in Columbia. Volunteers went into the community with food, water, hygiene items, sleeping bags, blankets, clothing, and other basic supplies. The work was immediate, imperfect, and real.
That history matters because the renewed program is not starting from a blank page. The Foundation is carrying forward the same practical instinct while adding stronger purchasing controls, privacy standards, volunteer coordination, defined budgets, and public reporting.

Campaign funds support Essentials Kit supplies, preparation, distribution, documentation, outreach, packaging, transportation, program logistics, and other reasonable direct or administrative costs necessary to operate the initiative effectively.
Are Essentials Kits guaranteed to contain the same items?
No. Contents may change based on season, supply availability, donated products, community need, funding, and the population or distribution setting being served.
Does Carolina Cares replace housing, food assistance, health care, or long-term services?
No. Essentials Kits are immediate practical aid. They are not represented as substitutes for housing, employment, health care, education, food-security programs, or long-term social services.
Can businesses participate?
Yes. Businesses may support the initiative through sponsorships, matching gifts, community grants, product donations, employee volunteer teams, gift cards, printing, logistics, or other suitable in-kind assistance.
