The Direct Outreach Model grew from a simple lesson learned during the original 2020 response: the people facing the most immediate hardship are not always the people most able to reach a giveaway site, navigate a service system, or ask for help first. Rather than relying exclusively on people to come to us, Carolina Cares can go into the community to help locate unmet need and place practical assistance closer to the point of need.
Depending on the activity, volunteers may assemble Essentials Kits, stage supplies, support Foundation-directed outreach, assist with field distribution, help identify immediate practical barriers, or provide approved resource information. Every assignment is structured around current needs, available resources, safety, privacy, and appropriate supervision.
The objective is concrete: move useful resources toward unmet need and help practical assistance reach people who might otherwise be overlooked.

The Direct Outreach Model

Not every assignment includes field outreach. When it does, volunteers serve as part of a Foundation-directed activity rather than conducting independent street outreach.
Reach
When field activities are offered, join approved outreach or distribution efforts that bring assistance closer to where need exists.
Assist
Help respond to immediate practical barriers with approved Essentials Kits, seasonal supplies, or other program resources available for the activity.
Connect
Share approved resource information when assigned, maintain dignity and privacy, and help the Foundation document what was distributed and where gaps remain.

This model was built through real field service.
Carolina Cares' direct-outreach philosophy comes from the Foundation's original 2020 volunteer response. Archival video and photographs document volunteers going into the community, including nighttime outreach, delivering food, water, sleeping materials, hygiene supplies, clothing, and other practical assistance.
The current program is more structured. The underlying principle remains: practical help can matter most when someone is willing to carry it beyond the table and toward the person who needs it.
