Poston Preserve Phase One: Building the Groundwork to Restore Poston

The proposed $25,000 Phase One framework for public history, community engagement, direct assistance, preservation, and planning in historic Poston, South Carolina.

Poston Preserve Phase One: Building the Groundwork to Restore Poston

The Poston Preserve Initiative is The Poston Foundation’s place-based effort to strengthen the historic community of Poston in Florence County through public history, community development, preservation, and long-term planning.

A defined Phase One

The current launch framework uses a proposed $25,000 Phase One budget across eight workstreams. The plan is designed to build a stronger documentary record, engage community knowledge, identify practical needs, test a modest visible project, and prepare a clearer roadmap for later decisions.

  • Community outreach & mapping — $4,000
  • Public archive & preservation — $5,000
  • Oral history & education — $2,500
  • Visible community pilot — $5,000
  • Direct assistance — $1,500
  • Conservation planning — $1,500
  • Economic & civic planning — $3,000
  • Coordination & reporting — $2,500

What “restore” means in this phase

For Phase One, restoration means making Poston more visible, better documented, better connected, and better positioned for future community decisions. The work combines historical research with local outreach, practical community support, and exploratory planning.

The Phase One budget is a planning framework for proposed work, not a report of completed expenditures or outcomes.
