Our Mission

Help now. Strengthen what comes next.

A South Carolina mission built around people, place, and practical action.

The Poston Foundation strengthens South Carolina communities through practical direct aid, place-based community development, and the preservation of local history and identity. We bring together charitable resources, volunteers, businesses, and community partners to meet immediate needs with dignity while building stronger local capacity, deeper community connections, and sustainable opportunities for long-term well-being.

Our Mission Pillars

Four ideas guide how we put the mission into practice.

Help

Meet immediate needs with useful, tangible support rather than vague promises.

Build

Build programs and local capacity carefully so good work can continue beyond a single campaign or event.

Preserve

Protect the history, records, identity, and community knowledge that give South Carolina places their character.

Connect

Bring donors, volunteers, businesses, civic groups, families, and community partners into work that is easier to understand and support.

Our Focus Areas

Where the mission is visible today.

Carolina Cares Essentials Kits

Practical support packages whose contents may vary with season, need, supply availability, and funding.

Practical Direct Aid

Carolina Cares Essentials Kits and related support address immediate resource gaps with dignity and practical usefulness.

Place-Based Community Development

The Poston Preserve Initiative begins with a defined community and combines public history, local engagement, preservation, and practical development work.

Local History & Identity

Archives, oral history, maps, photographs, family records, and community memory can become public resources rather than disappear.

Our Commitment

Plans are not results. We will say which is which.

The Foundation uses planning figures to build programs, but we do not present targets as completed impact. Public reporting should distinguish what was proposed, what was funded, what actually happened, and what still needs to be built.

The Need Behind the Mission

Basic resources can make a difficult day more manageable.

Immediate needs deserve attention

A person experiencing financial hardship or housing instability may need clean socks, soap, drinking water, or a simple first-aid item while pursuing longer-term help. Those needs do not wait for a larger service plan to be resolved.

Carolina Cares addresses this practical gap with useful essentials and appropriate resource information. A kit offers immediate support while a person pursues longer-term help with housing, employment, health care, or financial stability. Its value begins with the usefulness of the items and the dignity of the encounter.

Community identity is a public resource

Local records, photographs, maps, oral histories, and community knowledge help people understand where they live and what has shaped it. When those materials are scattered or difficult to access, a community’s story becomes harder to preserve and share.

Poston Preserve connects historical research with resident engagement and modest community planning. The aim is to build a useful public foundation for future decisions, while keeping larger economic, conservation, and civic possibilities clearly identified as exploratory work.

Mission in Practice

A practical path from support to documented activity.

Our program materials connect charitable purpose to the ordinary steps needed to carry out responsible work.

1. Understand the need

Plan around the people and place involved. For Carolina Cares, that includes useful supply categories, seasonal conditions, and distribution context. For Poston Preserve, it includes resident and property-owner outreach, a community profile, and an assessment of possible projects.

2. Match the scope to the resources

Organize fundraising, sponsorships, appropriate donated goods, and volunteer help around a manageable scope. Planning figures explain a possible program; available funds and confirmed capacity determine what can proceed.

3. Carry out useful work

Purchase or receive suitable supplies, prepare kits, and coordinate distribution. For place-based work, organize records, prepare public educational materials, and move feasible local projects forward as funding and permissions allow.

4. Keep records and learn

Document purchases, contributions, program activity, and completed work. Compare the plan with what occurred, identify changes in cost or approach, and use feedback to inform the next cycle.

A Focused South Carolina Mission

Growth should follow the work we can responsibly support.

A statewide purpose, a practical delivery footprint

The Foundation serves a South Carolina mission from Columbia. Carolina Cares began with documented outreach in Columbia, while Poston Preserve begins with one historic community in Florence County. Current distribution opportunities and community projects depend on local coordination and available resources.

New locations and partnerships should reflect identified needs, resources, and an achievable plan. Contact the Foundation to discuss a proposed community connection or current program availability.

Public benefit and recipient dignity

Charitable support should have an understandable public purpose. Essentials Kit reporting can record a date, distribution channel, and kit count without unnecessary recipient identification. Public-history work can make local knowledge more accessible while respecting permission and appropriate handling of source material.

We want people who receive support, give, volunteer, or share community knowledge to understand both the purpose of the work and how their participation fits.
